Communication

The one person that comes to my mind when I think about competent communication is my own mother. Everyone talks about “the look” that every mother needs, my mother has that look. I would stop dead in my tracks when she would give me that look. I knew right away that I was doing something that she didn’t approve of. She also used “the look” while she was teaching in elementary school. Her nonverbal communication is very clear and effective. I have started realizing that I have started utilizing “the look” with my own children. My look is not as effective as my mother’s but I know that it takes practice. I think learning this kind of nonverbal communication can be very beneficial not only in raising children but also while working with young children.

This is a picture of my mother, my oldest daughter and myself.

  1. Hello Alison

Mother's looks can be very persuasive, it can tell us so many things without saying a word. Expressive communication can be as effective and significant as oral communication. That is why it is so important to be aware of our facial and body communication when working with chidren and families, they are listening but also looking at us when we speak or listen to them.

  2. Hi Alison - Non verbals are one important part of communication that I did not even consider for this blog. I can remember my dad giving us that same look and we would straighten up right away. Sometimes we do not even think of our non verbals while communication and they can be so very importnant!

  3. Receiving the look from our parents always indicated "you know better". My mother was a teacher also, and what she incorporated in the school also was incorporated at home. With her students as well as her family she showed us how passionate and optimistic that she can be which indicated that she was very disappointed or happy about the choices we made.
