I have many stories of children that have touched my heart. The one that really stands out is about one of my cousins. She is victim of shaken baby syndrome. She was just a few weeks of age, her mother was at work and her father was at home taking care of her. One thing led to another and he did the unthinkable without realizing it. The mother was called at work and came home. They took the young girl to the hospital. She was Life-Flighted to Pittsburgh Hospital. The diagnosis was grim. They were told she might not even make it and if she did she would never walk, talk or do anything. The mother never gave up hope. She believed that God would take care of everything and that they would get through this and her child would make the impossible happen. After many years of therapy, doctor appointments and prayers this little girl walked her mother down the aisle without any aide, to begin a new life with a supportive stepfather. Every time my family sees this “Miracle Child” walking, talking and succeeding in school, we are reminded how we almost lost her but she was strong enough to endure the worst. I remind myself; this little girl who was given no chance to survive has survived and proves everyone wrong every day. She gives everyone who knows her or hears her story hope, that if she has gone through all of this and still succeeds so can we. Thursday, September 16, 2010

Alison, I really enjoyed reading this story about your cousin. She is definitely what I would call "a miracle child." Without a doubt she is a child that gives us all a reason to continue on day-to-day.
ReplyDeleteThanks Carmen! It was very hard to write the story, but on a side note. My cousin is having another surgery in ten days. She will be in casts from her knees down and on one side she will have from the knee up an immobilizer. Her goal is to her legs "fixed" so she can run.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this story. When I read it, I was reminded about how important it is to educate parents to ensure this will not happen. I find it sad when I hear stories about shaken baby syndrom. These are children that start out perfectly healthy and because parents get overwhelmed they do the unthinkable and hurt their children. I think your story is inspiring to others because it shows that despite all odd, there is a chance for children to recover. In my opinion, your cousin was very lucky to have such a great mother that never gave up hope. We need more parents like this in our world.
